Generic Glyset 25mg Tablet contains miglitol as its primary active ingredient. It is an alpha-glucosidase inhibitor that is used to control type-2 diabetes. This medication is taken at the start of a meal or along with a meal to control blood sugar levels in individuals who suffer from type 2 diabetes. Unlike other diabetes medications that induce an insulin spike, miglitol works by inhibiting the alpha-glucoside hydrolase enzymes, which break down complex sugars (oligosaccharides and disaccharides) into glucose (monosaccharides). This process takes place in the brush border (epithelial; villi) of the small intestine. This entire process delays the absorption of glucose in the body and helps in decreasing postprandial hyperglycemia (sugar spike after eating food).
